NEW THINKING

Many people have a theory about how to stop smoking.  Some people have shown us how to stop smoking, others have written books about it.  The thing is we are all individuals and one formula does not fit all.  That being said the one thing we all need to do is, we need to go back to the beginning.  We need to remember why we started smoking in the first place.  The reason is not very important.  However, it is important that you take the time to remember your specific reason and set of circumstances.   Think back and see that mental picture.   It was a choice, one you made.  Now it is time to make a new one.  It is time to take responsibility and to see that this was a part of your life.  You were in control then, and you still are.

You can now make a plan, one you will set in motion.  This plan will lead you to be a person that does not smoke.  This was your challenge to yourself, made possible by your choice to smoke.  Remember, you knew then as you do now that you can stop.

The thing is that if we hide from our cravings for smoking, if we try to ignore them, they gain power.  They feed off our imagination and set us up for failure every single time.  New thinking means that you acknowledge your cravings, or if they are not felt at this time, the reality of them.   Give your cravings a name, divorce yourself from these feelings.  These cravings are not you – these feeling cannot control you.

Now use your new thinking, watch your cravings like a cat watches a mouse.  Watch with interest.  Then you will find something amazing happens, something nobody told you was possible.

 EXERCISE

Really, why exercise?    Well there are more reasons than you may believe.  Firstly, your body will ask you for it.  The cravings and nicotine withdrawal makes you a bit jittery and anxious.  The best ways to deal with anxiety is by doing exercise.  It really helps.  Secondly, your body needs it.  When you exercise more oxygen is released into your blood and that helps with the healing process that will start in your whole body.   Thirdly, it gives your mind something else to focus on and something to feel good about.  Your will need to boost your confidence and this is a positive way of doing it.

So exercise is a great help for those who stop smoking.  Not all of us can get out in nature on a kayak but we can walk.  The human body was designed for it, no jogging needed.  Why go to gym, why not just get your walking shoes out and take on the road.  Clear your mind, and remember to watch that little voice in the back of your mind.  You know that voice that tells you how you will fail, how it is not going to work out.  That is not you, watch that dialogue and remember:

 WATER

Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water is essential for good health.  When you stop smoking, many people believe that a water fast is a good way to clear the body of nicotine.  Well that is simply not necessary.  The majority of nicotine will leave your body in 2-3 hours and the rest within 3 to 5 days.  Drinking water is not necessary to help detox from nicotine as much as from the nearly 4000 other chemicals in cigarettes. 

Nicotine is only one of the addictive substances in cigarettes.  The problem in addiction is not only a chemical one.  The chemicals in the cigarettes influences your brains neural pathways.   Therefore, once the chemicals have left the pathways need to reset.  A detox will help the body regain it health but do not solve the addiction problem.

Water, why drink water then?  The answer is simple.  Your neurological pathways is telling you to put something in your mouth.  So do it.  However, while you may choose to put gum in your mouth or use a toothpick, why not make a new and healthy habit.  If you have, a craving drink a glass of water.  It worked for me.  After a couple of days, my brain got the message.  If you get this craving, you get water. It soon stopped with the cravings.

SUPPORT

 

Find support wherever you can get it.  Support means to “bear all or part of the weight”.  You will need somebody that support you while you stop smoking.  They will not be able to do it for you, but they can carry some of the weight.  A good idea is to ask somebody to be your support buddy before you quit smoking.  You know this may put strain on your body and mind so get somebody who can be the positive and optimistic.  A coach that can listen to you complain and still hear what you have to say.  If you think you need to find somebody outside your circle of family - do it.  It may be a good idea to get a stop smoking coach.  You can contact us if you need one.  A experienced coach is a phone call away.  Stop smoking coaches will help you deal with this process.  Its more than a physical addiction.  You need to remember why you started smoking in the first place.  Were you that rebel? The youngster who felt like testing your willpower against the world?

TIME AND TEMPERANCE

Choose your time.  Decide when you are going to stop.  A good strategy is to speak to your stop smoking coach before you set about stopping.  Different people have different ideas.  Some like to stop when they have time to focus on the problem.  Other like to be busy so they are not even aware of the cravings.  The truth is when you set a time and make a plan, write it down or email you stop smoking coach, you will have a 76% better chance of being successful.  Choose, plan and put it in writing, it works.

Lungs stop smoking

AIR – BREATHING

It is said that if we learn to breathe correctly we will never be sick.  Breathing is an essential part of life.  It is also one that we hardly ever think about.  We breathe without thinking about it, so we don’t.  When you stop smoking your breathing and lung function start improving within 4 days.   Your lung capacity will improve with 10% in 3-6 months.  The cilia in the lungs will regenerate and the lungs will detoxify.  After 10 years the chances of having lung cancer will be that of a non-smoker.


Bringing back your lungs elasticity and improving lung function is a matter of taking time.  I did breathing exercises each morning for 5-10 minutes.  I also did 3 cycles after drinking every glass of water.

Morning Exercise

Step 1    Breath in to maximum capacity.

Step 2    Hold for 4 counts ( 1001 – 1002 – 1003 -1004)

Step 3   Breath out to minimum capacity.

Step 4    Hold for 4 counts ( 1001 – 1002 – 1003 -1004)

Step 5    Repeat

 REST

When you stop smoking you may have problems sleeping.  Some people report anxiety and difficulty in going to sleep.  Personally, I did not have that problem.  If you do,  try having an Epsom salt bath before going to sleep.  Put at least 2 cups in the warm water and soak for a bit.  The magnesium is taken up via the skin and helps to calm the nerves.  Sleeping is essential to our bodies ability to repair itself.  This will be needed to repair the damage done when you stop smoking.

You were created with amazing capacities and abilities.  You started smoking and you can stop smoking.  Sometimes you just need some help from your Creator.  So put your trust in God.  God is ready to connect with you in a new way, trust Him to support you on this journey.  Whey not tap into the Infinite Power when you are ready to change.
